IMPORTANT NEWS: On September 17, 2012, $74.88 million in federal stimulus funds necessary to build a third line for rail traffic between Stafford County (Arkendale) and Potomac Shores (Cherry Hill) was granted to the Virginia Department of Rail & Public Transportation. Construction is scheduled to begin on September 20, 2017. This will increase speed and capacity of passenger rail traffic of the Fredericksburg Line of Virginia Railway Express (VRE). The Potomac & Rappahannock Transportation Commission (PRTC) and Virginia Railway Express are negotiating the design and construction of second platforms at all Fredericksburg Line stations with rail owner CSX Corporation. The second platforms at Brooks and Leeland stations are expected to be finished between FY2017 & FY2019. Plans for the Potomac Shores rail station are expected to cost $30,890,000. Potomac Shores developer SunCal will contribute $15.5 million of the construction expenses which includes 550 parking spaces. These improvements are part of the Virginia Rail Enhancement Fund (Six Year Program). The construction of Potomac Shores VRE station platforms is scheduled for FY2020.
