Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area is on the Mason Neck peninsula. Meadowood Recreation Area has 13 miles of hiking, horseback riding, and mountain bike trails. There are also 2 fishing ponds, 800 acres of forest and meadows, environmental education programs, geocaching, picnic facilities, bird watching, and managed deer hunts at Meadowood. The environmental education programs at Meadowood are designed for home school programs, public and private schools, local 4-H groups, and community youth agencies. The 9,000 acre Mason Neck peninsula is located along the Potomac River about 18 miles south of Washington, D.C. Nearby attractions include Gunston Hall, historic home of George Mason IV (author of the Virginia Bill of Rights), Elizabeth Hartwell – Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge, Mason Neck State Park, and Pohick Bay Regional Park. The Bureau of Land Management Lower Potomac Field Station is located at 10406 Gunston Road.
