Upgrades to Prince William County Public Schools and Parks
The following upgrades (1-5) will occur during 2014 to upgrade and expand fields for youth sports. This is part of a plan to increase field availability for football, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, and field hockey youth leagues. The 2014 Prince William County budget will likely include talks to add field lights to 36 existing athletic fields, and add 30 more fields throughout the county.
- Artificial turf fields and field lights at Gainesville Middle School and Saunders Middle School (Dale City) for $2 million.
- Additional auxiliary field at Veterans Park (Woodbridge) for $300,000.
- Field lights for the multi-purpose field and diamond field at Long Park (Gainesville) for $400,000.
- Field lights at Godwin Middle School (Dale City) for $200,000. Future plans include funding for a artificial turf field.
- Auxiliary field and restrooms at Fuller Heights Park (Triangle) for $150,000 tax money and $150,000 development proffers.
On December 18, 2013 the Prince William County School Board approved construction of the 12th high school (Senator Charles Colgan High School) in the county. The new high school will be built near the corner of Dumfries Road (Route 234) and Hoadly Road (Route 642) next to Benton Middle School. It’s $97.9-$101.5 million price tag includes $14.6 million for 110 acre high school campus, and a 425,176 sq. ft. building design similar to Patriot High School. The 12th high school is designed to educate 2,053 students. The location allows it to relieve overcrowding at Brentsville, Hylton, and Osbourn Park High Schools.

he aquatics center at the 12th high school will have a 116′ by 75′ competition pool and 47′ by 75′ recreation pool. The 8,700 sq. ft. competition pool will have eight (9 feet wide) swimming lanes. The facility will be used primarily for high school practices and swim meets, basic lessons for students, water therapy for special needs students, and competition & practice venue for underwater robotics programs. Operating costs may be offset through use by private group and local citizens.
Upgrades include a $8.4-$10.5 million aquatics facility containing a competition pool and swimming instruction & leisure pool. The aquatics center allows the school board to institute a swimming instruction plan for all 5th grade students. The program and yearly operational costs of the aquatics center are expected to be $1 million. The new high school will also become the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, moving from Woodbridge High School, once the school opens in September 2016. This requires the expansion of the auditorium, orchestra pit lift, and second smaller performance area referred to as a black box theatre. The main athletic field and auxiliary field will have artificial turf.
The 13th high school may possibly become part of the development of 900 homes on 864 acres of the Stone Haven subdivision. The latest Bristow master planned community is located at Piney Branch between Linton Hall Road, Devlin Road, and Wellington Road. The proffers for a high school site at Stone Haven will require an 80 acre parcel. Final plans and proffers have not been determined for this Brentsville Magisterial District housing project. The 13th high school is scheduled for completion September 2019. Because negotiations for the 13th high school site are currently ongoing, the School Board has not announced details for a site plan.
The construction for the 58th elementary school at 8008 Devlin Road in Gainesville (Chris Yung Elementary School) will begin soon with a completion date of September 2015. On December 18, 2013, the School Board unanimously approved the project. The 20.8 acre Devlin Road elementary school site was purchased for $3,238,500, and the 107,273 sq. ft. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified school will cost $20.286 million to complete. It will serve 850 students and relieve overcrowding at Victory & T. Clay Wood Elementary Schools. It will also provide balanced enrollments at surrounding elementary schools.
Other school expansion according to the Approved Capital Improvements Program (2012-2021) includes the 2014 completion of a new elementary school in Haymarket, and K-8 school in Nokesville. The completion of a Linton Hall area elementary school is scheduled for 2015. Potomac Shores community elementary school opens in 2017, and Linton Hall will have a new middle school, while Woodbridge will have a new elementary school in the Neabsco Mills area in 2018.
