Ferry Farm Historical Marker Stafford County VirginiaAcross from Fredericksburg on the Rappahannock River in Stafford County is Ferry Farm. It was George Washington’s childhood home from 1738-1754, and the place where our first president at age six couldn’t lie to his father after chopping down a prized cherry tree. George Washington left Ferry Farm to work as a surveyor west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 1774 Mary Ball Washington (mother) moved to a home in Fredericksburg purchased for her by George Washington. Ferry Farm was sold to Dr. Hugh Mercer. But he never occupied it due to his service as a Brigadier General in the Revolutionary War. In 1777 he was killed at the Battle of Princeton and became a symbol of American bravery for the Continental Army. The Union Army of the Potomac used Ferry Farm as a winter camp and crossing point over the Rappahannock River during the… Continue reading

Stafford County Restaurants and Shopping

We’ve lived in Stafford County since 1991. The best thing we can say about Stafford County restaurants and shopping is there is no shortage of chain restaurants and retail stores. Our best advice if you’re looking for something different is to go to Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center (Prince William County), Fredericksburg Historic District, and Spotsylvania Towne Centre. But there are some favorite local places worth your time and money. Some because of the food quality and atmosphere, and others because they are unique.

Stafford County Restaurants

These are our favorites:

  • Amy’s Cafe Located next to the Rappahannock River in Falmouth. Casual menu done well. The outdoor patio attracts motorcyclists & locals from the Rappahannock Region.
  • Bella Cafe A coffee house, frozen custard and ice cream shop, and burger & sandwich joint. The kitchen doesn’t disappoint. Don’t be scared away when you find the restaurant. Open… Continue reading
