Public education in Prince William County consists of Prince William County Public Schools, Manassas City Schools, and Manassas Park City Schools. There are 59 elementary schools (K-5), 18 middle schools (6-8), and 11 high schools (9-12) educating 85,451 students in Prince William County Public Schools. This does not include the Governor’s School at Innovation Park on the George Mason University Science and Technology Campus. It’s a collaborative initiative with Manassas City Public Schools and Manassas Park City Schools. The Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (Alexandria) is another collaborative effort for advanced studies. Prince William County Colleges and Universities

Colleges and universities in Prince William County include the George Mason University Science and Technology Campus (Manassas), Northern Virginia Community College with campuses in Manassas and Woodbridge, ECPI University (Manassas), Stratford University (Woodbridge) and Strayer University with campus buildings in Manassas and Woodbridge.  George Mason University Science and Technology Campus in Prince William County educates students pursuing undergraduate, and graduate degrees. Community partnerships at George Mason University in Manassas include the Hylton Performing Arts Center, the Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center, and the National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases.

Osbourn High School (Manassas City) has recently instituted an education program designed for college preparation. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an elective class offered to students who would like to prepare for four-year universities. The curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, note-taking, study skills, and college/career/motivational activities. College students serve as tutors in the classroom twice a week. Field trips to surrounding universities educate students to local undergraduate opportunities. Students must take notes in classes on a daily basis. Participants must also satisfy program requirements of citizenship, attendance, and a grades. Upgrades to Prince William County Public Schools and Parks

The following upgrades (1-5) will occur during 2014 to upgrade and expand fields for youth sports. This is part of a plan to increase field availability for football, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, and field hockey youth leagues. The 2014 Prince William County budget will likely include talks to add field lights to 36 existing athletic fields, and add 30 more fields throughout the county.

  • Artificial turf fields and field lights at Gainesville Middle School and Saunders Middle School (Dale City) for $2 million.
  • Additional auxiliary field at Veterans Park (Woodbridge) for $300,000.
  • Field lights for the multi-purpose field and diamond field at Long Park (Gainesville) for $400,000.
  • Field lights at Godwin Middle School (Dale City) for $200,000. Future plans include funding for a artificial turf field.

Student-Teacher Ratios in Prince William County Public Schools

Peter Candland, Gainesville District County Supervisor, recently held a town hall meeting to discuss growing number of students in classrooms.The Meeting discussed several findings in the 2014 Washington Boards of Education Report. Prince William County Public Schools have been experiencing increasing student enrollments since 2005. Student-teacher ratios for 2014 are expected to be 23.3 students in each classroom at elementary schools, 30.8 students in middle school classrooms, and 30.3 students for each teacher in high schools. These are the highest student-teacher ratios in the Washington Metropolitan Area.

Marsteller Middle School at 14000 Sudley Manor Drive (Bristow) is fully accredited and the magnet school for mathematics and science among middle schools in Prince William County.
